Practicing the SEM Learning System

Both students and teachers have a role to play in practicing the SEM Learning System from The Self-Education Manual. If the student is self-teaching, one person handles both roles.

Roles of Teacher and Student

Before the student becomes familiar with the SEM Learning System, the teacher takes the lead to enable the student to gain quick experience and see some results. To accomplish this fast start, the teacher utilizes the 16 study methods to choose the learning objects and develop study sheets with hints and answers for quizzes. Then the student, possibly employing flashcards, practices by choosing from among just the following three methods: Interleaved Practice, Practice Testing and Delayed Testing.

Medical Analogy

Medical interns receive experience to be able to make a planned list of steps for a specific medical procedure. Likewise, students train with the SEM Learning System to be able to make a planned list of study methods for learning something.

In medicine, one starts with a myriad of learned medical routines. Similarly, in the SEM Learning System, one starts with learned study methods (some methods in the Manual may masquerade under a different name, but these methods are generally known by both students and teachers). Upon gaining experience and confidence, students can accomplish both roles for learning nearly any subject.
