The purpose of the soon to appear test drive, or demonstration, is to experience the SEM learning system of developing a learning plan, that is a list of study methods for approaching the learning of some subject. Before taking the test drive, it is best to be shown how to use the ignition system, which is called the Learning Tool Kit. Begin by finding the Study Methods Chart. Notice the manner in which the Chart has been organized. Generally, one hunts through the study methods chronologically from top to bottom. In Column 1, steps are listed to organize the sixteen study methods. The study methods are named in Column 2. In Column 3, they are briefly described. And Column 4 briefly tells either when or how to use each study method.
The five study methods of Step One help to reduce confusion. Then, in Step Two, three study methods help in the case where the learning object has not yet been identified. The five study methods of Step Three help you to invent memory tools. Afterward, the two methods of Step Four help you to develop the ability to recall the learning object. And, finally, the one study method of Step Five helps you solidify the learning by applying the learning object.
After familiarizing yourself with the Study Methods Chart, you are now ready to look at the Decision Tree and then the Flowchart. The Decision Tree is a quick, simple guide to help you choose the study methods for your learning plan. If, when applying the Decision Tree, you desire a more detailed and visual alternative way to select study methods for your learning plan, then it is time for you to employ the Flowchart. (See the third demonstration example.)
While many diverse additional examples and explanations are to be found in the Self-Education Manual, the three examples of the “test drive” form a demonstration of how to plan your study. After working through the test drive, you should be ready to think about how to learn an example of your own choosing.
