Conversation with a New College Student

Student: Will your material help in learning a variety of subjects?
Author: Yes. These study methods are for learning. The SEM learning system is to different subjects as a car is to different destinations.

Student: Will it take a lot of time to learn the system?
Author: The Self-Education Manual is similar to a cookbook. You don’t have to know all of the recipes to get started.

Student: But aren’t there several study methods?
Author: Yes. Learning the methods can be done in order as you go. There are three useful tools: 1) a Study Methods Chart, 2) a Decision Tree for choosing which study method and in what order, and 3) a Flow Chart for refining those choices.

Student: What if I am able to chop down a tree with my current axe?
Author: Why not try a chainsaw?

Student: If these methods are so good, why didn’t someone else already invent them?
Author: The methods have been around for many years. My learning system logically organizes studying by helping you choose and sequence good methods for each specific step in studying a specific learning object.

Student: Do you mean to say that to learn something, one does not merely pick one favorite study method?
Author: It takes typically about a half dozen study methods to learn something.

Student: How many methods are in your system?
Author: There are sixteen listed on the Study Methods Chart.

Student: How many steps are there to learn something?
Author: There are five steps also listed on the Study Methods Chart. They are listed in chronological order along with the study methods that work for each step.

Student: Are all of the steps necessary?
Author: Sometimes you will already have a step done, and can skip it. For example, your routine for getting your day started might include picking out what to wear. If you made your clothing choices before going to sleep, you can skip that step.

Student But you still have to do all of the steps?
Author: Sometimes a step is done for you. For example, your instructor in a given subject may have told you a specific learning object. If so, you can skip the step of selecting a learning object.

Student: How did I get to this point in my education without knowing these steps?
Author: The steps are very simple and logical, and you can find them by trial and error. Sometimes you can continue using a step after moving on to another step. This is analogous to having several meal items on different burners of a stove concurrently.

Student: Has your learning system been around for a while?
Author: No. I invented it and have taught it and used it, but it is only recently in book form for wide distribution.

Student: Where is the book obtainable?
Author: We hope it will appear wherever books are, such as in stores, in libraries, our website and under some Christmas trees.
